Why do power outages happen in Iran? Every time the price of Bitcoin rises, power outages suddenly intensify in the country! This strange phenomenon has been repeated several times and now it can no longer be considered “coincidence”. Officials, as usual, repeat their usual excuse: “The heat started earlier this year!”—while the people have not felt anything like this at all! The reality is different: the mining mafia is devouring the country’s electricity! Under the safe umbrella of special institutions, Bitcoin mining farms are active 24/7, consuming astronomical amounts of electricity; without being accountable to anyone. To produce one Bitcoin, about 1,000 megawatt-hours of electricity are needed; which, even with the most expensive industrial electricity tariff in Iran, costs less than 2 billion Tomans. This is while the selling price of one Bitcoin on the open market reaches more than 8.5 billion Tomans! This means that the profitability of miners is so high that they return all their capital in less than 22 months; a return that does not exist in any other industry. But who pays for these billion-dollar profits? The people! With power outages, industries are shut down, jobs are destroyed, patients are harmed, education is paralyzed, financial losses are suffered by small and online businesses... And then the officials shamelessly point the finger of accusation at the people: "You are consuming too much!" No, gentlemen! Power outages are not just the result of household consumption. This is the result of the plundering of the country's electricity by miners who are behind certain institutions. Your personal gain is a disaster that people must pay for. Edging Not to be hyperbolic but I think a lot hinges on this case, crypto might be cooked if the defense doesn't win. At the very least the ethos and ideals that crypto was founded on.

The outcome of the Tornado Cash case will have a huge effect on the remainder of my working life. IMHO everything worth building in this space is going to piss off one powerful entity or another. If writing powerful code isn’t protected by law, then we can’t build anything worth building out in the open. Everything worth building will have to be built by anons or non-US citizens. If having your code be used by criminals is sufficient to make you a criminal, then we cannot legally build *anything* that is permissionless. If Roman loses, my options are: - go work on some gatekept, permissioned, centralized, cucked project that doesn’t empower anyone — (I’d rather become a goat herder) - go underground and build illegal code anon (mad respect for people who do that, but I have a family to raise and I’ve seen enough prison movies to not want to go there) - leave tech and do… whatever non-tech people do. Herd goats or something. The jury has a lot of lives and careers in their hands and probably don’t even realize it.
