Because "good" visual art, except outsider art, is partially a response to, a dialogue with all visual art that came before it. You use a different part of your brain to appreciate it, the cortex versus the amygdala. @Paulg's art take is sound.

Why is visual art like this when music kind of just... isn't? The best stuff from Tchaikovsky, say, just sounds good, even to laypeople, and then when you study it as a serious music theory student it turns out it's good for roughly the reasons laypeople think it's good.
