Maybe part of me doesn’t want to acknowledge everything your face and body express, and what you and the other prisoners have endured. They are still, Marwan, chasing you and pursuing you even in the solitary cell you’ve lived in for two years. The occupation and its figures are still locked in conflict with you, the shackles still on your hands — but I know your spirit and your resolve, and I know you will remain free, free, free. You care only about the cause of your people, ending their suffering — which has reached the heavens in Gaza — and achieving their freedom and preserving their dignity. Here they [your people] are writing: O mountain, no wind can shake you: O mountain, no wind can shake you. I know the only thing that can shake you is what you hear about your people’s pain, and the only thing that can break and hurt you is the lack of protection for our sons and daughters. You are of the people; wherever you are, you are among them, from them, part of them. Your fate is bound to theirs. That’s how you have always been, and that’s how you will remain.”
