50 million years ago, a star exploded in the galaxy NGC 7331. The light from this explosion reached us only in July of this year. This is a type Ia supernova - a thermonuclear explosion of a dead star (or rather, its core), a white dwarf, which pulled matter from its companion star onto itself until it reached a critical mass.
