I posted about crypto stuff for a while. Then I stopped caring about that part of crypto. Nay, not just stopped caring—started to actively despise it. I had two choices: continue catering to the audience I'd built around a persona that wasn't me in order to maintain engagement, or pivot to talking about the things I actually cared about and see what would happen. So I pivoted to talking about the things I actually cared about, and my engagement PLUMMETED. As in, I don't think there would have been much of a difference between doing that and just deleting my account and starting over altogether. But, little by little, I started building up an audience that was interested in the things I was interested about. (A lot of this consisted of losing as many followers every day as I gained new followers, essentially undergoing a Twitter blood transfusion.) Now I'm practically back to break even, but I don't have to cater or manicure my content to appeal to a specific audience or ecosystem or tickers. I can just say whatever I want to say because the audience that follows me here now is interested in my unique viewpoint (we all have one, we just shy away from presenting it) and is not expecting me to just tell them their bags are looking bullish. It feels pretty good!
