Netflix is in the process of totally destroying the documentary film. They completely blur the line of reality/fiction with contrived interviews, clearly scripted and presented as spontaneous. They also cut frequently with glamour shots of beautiful scenery which may have little to do with the plot. All interviews take place in glamorous homes. All of this gives the viewer a sense of being part of something beautiful - like boomers who used to watch ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.’ For a documentary film to have any meaning at all it must at least try to approximate reality. Showing the grit of life. That Zwigoff profile of Robert Crumb was pretty good. But Netflix taking Ghilane Maxwell and turning sex trafficking into Eyes Wide Shut not so much. And the ‘docu-dramas’ like the one with the Menendez brothers was just sick. Presenting these weird murderers as ripped body builders îs just depraved.
