Tonight is a full moon so I’d like to inform you that a few peer reviewed studies in the 1900s found statistically significant synchronization between the 4 phases of the 28 day moon cycle and the 4 phases of the ~28 day human female menstrual cycle After the internet and smart phones became ubiquitous, this correlation disappeared in subsequent studies and modern science now largely claims this synchronization is a folklore myth But a 2021 meta analysis study concluded by suggesting that human menstrual cycles used to be synchronized with the moon, but have been disrupted by modern lifestyle and artificial light Studies have found that young women (under 35) have higher rates of synchronization with the moon than older women, indicating the synchronization also diminishes with age. Among young women, women in rural areas had higher synchronization and young women who are not “night owls” (aka closer to circadian rhythm and less exposed to nighttime artificial light) also had higher synchronization, suggesting that the moon’s light itself could be the mechanism of synchronization In traditions linking menstrual cycles with the moon’s cycles, the full moon tends to coincide with ovulation while new moons tends to coincide with the bleeding phase If a woman is young, lives in a rural area or outdoors a lot and not addicted to artificial light at night, chances are high that she is in ovulation tonight
