I’ve rarely seen a project as manipulative as @_Qubic_. They attempted a 51% attack on $XMR, and their main weapon wasn’t raw power but psychological manipulation. This shows that in any attack, even on blockchains, the psychological component is crucial. Here’s the latest update: + They claimed to control 51% of the Monero network, but that was completely false. At their peak, they held around 35–38%, later dropping closer to 30%. + By withholding and strategically releasing blocks, Qubic sometimes appeared to control more than half the blocks, but this was variance and manipulation, not true majority power. + Qubic loudly claimed victory to pressure miners into defecting to their pool out of fear of losing profitability. + Between block heights 3,475,510 and 3,476,208, an audit showed Qubic mined exactly 35.7% of blocks, not 51%. + If honest miners had stayed coordinated, Qubic remained a minority. But fear of others defecting created rational incentives for miners to switch, a dangerous game theory dynamic. + Blockchain data suggests Qubic injected new hashing power (about +5% perceived hashrate), not just redirected existing Monero miners, making the threat more credible. + Even with only ~35%, Qubic managed to destabilize Monero by combining selfish mining with psychological pressure, proving a full 51% isn’t necessary to cause damage. + Miners must rely on verifiable data, not social media claims. Better coordination and communication could have neutralized the attack much earlier. The attack revealed a core truth, Monero’s security depends not only on math, but on the collective behavior of its miners. Qubic didn’t defeat Monero, but it showed how perception and coordination failures can endanger PoW networks.
