When it comes to investing, I believe the most important factor is ultimately the people behind the project.
It might sound ironic coming from someone who co-founded a research firm focused on blockchain technology and narrative analysis — but as much as technology and narrative matter, everything eventually comes down to the people who build it.
Sure, if the tech is exceptionally strong or the narrative is incredibly compelling, a project might still succeed even if the founders lack in personal character. But I still believe that character is the most important long-term signal.
In the case of @SuiNetwork, it’s not that the founders are particularly flashy or charismatic — but they’re just genuinely decent people(@EvanWeb3, @EmanAbio, @b1ackd0g, @GDanezis, and @kostascrypto. Even Sui and Mysten team members like @ImmutableGK, @unceenc, @0xyoungin, @theharrisonkim).
I remember when our company was still just four people; they never dismissed us as “too small” and treated every interaction with us as meaningful. That kind of attitude might seem trivial, but for someone like me, that early kindness sticks with you forever. This creates loyalty.
With people like @PrimordialAA from @LayerZero_Core and @LucaNetz from @pudgypenguins & @AbstractChain , I got the sense that they’re completely consumed by what they’re building. They seem obsessively focused on their products — and it shows. I haven’t interacted with them much on a personal level, so I can’t speak to their character, but they both strike me as the kind of people whose success just feels inevitable.
@chameleon_jeff from @HyperliquidX is someone I don’t know personally either, but just from observing his behavior, it’s clear he’s someone who doesn’t compromise. He seems like the type with strong principles, the intelligence to realize his vision, and the capital to execute it. I always felt Hyperliquid was destined to succeed — I just happened to enter at the wrong price point(bought it too high).
All this makes me realize that while technical and data-driven analysis is valuable, evaluating who is building the product can be just as important for making good investment decisions. No matter how fancy the tech or infrastructure is, if the founders or team members are arrogant, wasteful, or indulge in excess before even shipping the product — or if their attitude shifts dramatically before and after the TGE — that’s always a red flag for me.
I think it could be really valuable for Populus to start creating content that focuses on these human elements. It would be a meaningful contribution to the market.
