First time visiting the Hamptons over the weekend. Notice a woman and her friend marching toward me. I can tell she has something to say to me.  I notice a septum piercing and a shoulder tattoo. I brace myself for the wisdom of the ages. Her “Excuse me, you’re smoking a cigar.” Me to myself: Karen is a slur, Rob. You shouldn’t even think it! Let alone say it. Her “Don’t you think smoking is a luxury belief? What about all those poor black people who die of menthol cigarettes?” (yes, this is a real quote) Me “I know. I know. I’m a victim myself. I started with cigarettes as a foster kid to cope and have never been able to overcome the addiction. I’m smoking this cigar due to circumstances beyond my control.” Her “Hmm. I read your book. Very interesting. I think the luxury beliefs idea is mostly right but your examples just seemed so cherry-picked. You didn’t mention anything about gender or bodily autonomy. Everything is about gender and you just chose to entirely ignore that.” She turns to my friend “Anyway. So where did you summer?” Me, deep in thought to myself: This is exactly what I imagined the Hamptons would be like.
