Official transit data is in for the first half of this year & DC's WMATA remains the fastest-growing agency in America! Ridership is up nearly 15% year-on-year SEPTA, Seattle Metro, & the LIRR have also seen strong growth, with Boston's MBTA & NJTransit losing riders
WMATA has just now edged out the NYC MTA to achieve the strongest post-pandemic recovery of any major US transit agency! In the first half of this year, ridership was at 88% of 2019 levels. LA Metro & NJTransit have also had strong recoveries, while SF BART & Chicago's CTA lag.
Some bad news is that anti-ICE protests, Federal occupation of DTLA, the temporary closure of several stations, and threats of immigration raids drove LA Metro use down significantly in June, with ridership down roughly 7% compared to last year.
Some good news is that ridership on the Bay Area's Caltrain continues to skyrocket in the wake of the route's electrification—passenger counts are up 79% compared to this time last June
Once again, I would usually end this by showing Sound Transit light rail ridership in Seattle, but they unfortunately *still* haven't updated their official federal data in several months. The unofficial data on their website says ridership is up 25% over the last year though!
