If you have chronic pain and feel stuck, Tanner or I want to help you run structured experiments to debug it. Backstory: I nearly dropped out of my grad degree at MIT because of wrist pain. Typing had become effectively impossible and, worse still, the advice from the doctor and physiotherapist made the pain more intense. Inspired partly by the literature on embodied cognition, I decided to run my own experiments. I mapped triggers, paid close attention to the subtle emotional tone of my pain, and noticed what changed as I moved from different parts of the body. It actually worked. I made a full recovery and started both doing research (building computational models of pain at MIT) and coaching others. In the past year, @almostheir and I have been coaching people to run experiments to debug their pain. I've also been slowly articulating how the solution to pain requires a paradigm shift into collective intelligence/embodiment/cybernetic lens (manifesto in our newsletter). Perhaps the most surprising thing is how quickly long-standing pain can go away. It took me months, but we had one person with ten year old shoulder pain disappear five minutes into our free consultation. If you’ve tried doctors, PTs, perhaps read Dr Sarno —and are still stuck—we’d love to talk. More info and link in next tweet
