We have this thing in the Unfungible sales team that if we can’t control it, we don’t speak about it. I remember there was a point a few months back where the term “the market is slow” was being repeated every week in team meetings. This creates a belief where “True, the market is slow, therefore my low performance is justified.” I hated seeing this belief get seeded in people’s minds. We decided as a team to ban the word “slow” and only focus on factors we control. “Response rate is down, what do we do?” “We’re getting more objections, how do we handle that?” This way of framing problems instead of “It’s a slow week” has created a culture of proactivity within the team. Today, people know that if someone brings up the market, they will get called out for it. Audit your company culture and ask yourself honestly: Are there any beliefs you have no control over that dictate your team’s morale? If the answer is yes, call an emergency meeting and create a new chapter where you only speak about things you have control over.
